How to use color theory to Improve your makeup.

SERIOUSLY….WHAT IS ALL THE FUSS ABOUT COLOR THEORY?

I once went to an art exhibition and saw a huge painting being listed for an insane amount of money. At first glance, it looked like the artist just mindlessly splashed paint all over a canvas and called it art...

But on a closer look, i began to see how those seemingly scattered colors came together to create beautiful, intricate patterns and designs.

I saw how each of the color used complemented the other ones, resulting in a beautiful piece of art that now graced a renowned gallery… And yes sold for a gazillion naira.

Clearly, there was a deliberate “method to the madness”.

Now, as an MUA, You are a visual artist just like any other. The only difference is that, your medium is the human face.

Remember, it is not called Makeup ‘Artistry’ for nothing, and just like any other artist that works with colors, you need to understand the “method to the madness” of working with colors to create beautiful art.

So that when you have different colors on the eye, lips and cheeks, they complement each other instead of fighting against one another.

This is basically what color theory is all about.

It is a practical guide to choosing color combinations and mixing colors, in a way that is visually appealing and harmonious.

To help you understand the basics of color theory, allow me to introduce you to a special tool called… THE COLOR WHEEL.

is simply a visual representation of colors and how they interact with each other.

It is a tool (mostly in the form of an image) that shows the relationships between colors and the best way to combine them to create your desired results.

The skin tone color wheel on the other hand is a type of color wheel that shows you the undertone of skin tone colors and how to alter it.

It is designed to help individuals, especially makeup artists, identify suitable colors that complement different skin tones. Similar to the traditional color wheel, it categorizes colors into cool, warm, and neutral tones, offering guidance on selecting makeup shades that enhance natural beauty.
